The Drive Episode 6 – Equity

My name is Scott. After 18.5 years as a high school math teacher in public education I have made the move to become a full time PhD student. This decisions was difficult, but has been one of the most rewarding things that I have ever done. Teaching in high school was an incredible experience for me, so leaving an environment that I loved for the unknown was a challenge. As I high school teacher, I taught almost every math course that could be offered. I was able to earn National Board Certification in Young Adult Math. I was honored as my building Teacher of the Year, no mean feat at Edmond Memorial High School!! My career changed as I became fascinated with educational technology and all of the things that it can do for teachers. I flipped my class. I used iPads and blogging (in high school math!!). I started using gamification and mastery learning. I changed my practice. I chose to go back to school to learn as much as I could. To bring that knowledge from academia and research to the teacher on the front line. I have had the opportunity to present at several conferences and share what I have learned with others. Its through these connections that we can be the best teachers we can for our students. They deserve it and we sell ourselves short when we don't give it. I love talking with teachers about change. About incorporating educational technology. About the power that they have to change lives. My blog space is me, it shares my passions and frustrations, my joys and my learnings.   1. Expanding your horizons? Good for you! Trying to come to terms with our nation’s educational funding approach that is systemically biased against equity, which in addition to obvious moral implications, also has a Great Deal to do with the ability to implement edtech inside (and more importantly, outside) the classroom? Good for you. Keep reading, keep asking questions!

    By the way, you are correct that teaching volume integrals is much harder than teaching area integrals in calculus. (Ok, confession, I asked my math prof husband to give me a quote about what you said! I can barely remember how to solve for x in the simplest of middle-school algebraic equations. But I know 8 languages so I must not be a total idiot. Social IQ = that of toddler, so maybe I’m just an idiot savant lol!)

Yes, it is a tough problem – as all meaningful problems are… But, you are absolutely right when you say “There is a solution?” Oh sure, there are the finger-pointers: ‘The politicians put the money elsewhere in the budget.” The politicians will never mandate anything but testing for ranking students, teachers, and schools.” The town residents are too poor to support technology purchases.” Notice that these three examples are negative – as is the usual focus!!!

    I’d bet my last dollar that without increased budgets, THERE IS a solution. The first requirement is to seek to find the solutions rather than justify our beliefs that there are no solutions. I’m believing there are citizens, teachers, techies, students that can come together to identify those solutions.

    Bottom line: It’s much easier to be negative…. Great podcast as usual!!!
