QR Code Scavenger Hunt

Last year at the beginning of the year, I had my students do a QR code math review.  It was great fun and it allowed the students to explore the school!  You can do this to – just figure out what the key areas of your building are and have the students make a visit!  Have new faculty?  Have them do a scavenger hunt and tweet a selfie!

Here is what you do…

  1. In Google Docs or in a Microsoft word, create your questions.  One question per page.  Google Docs are best because they are already on the internet (more freedom).  I taught math, so my questions were math.  You teach______________so your questions will be about ________________.  Post these questions at the location the students are directed to.
  2. Pick out the locations in your building that you want to use, these will be where your QR code will direct people to go.  A cloud based document will work best for this (the QR code will take them there).
  3. Use a QR code creator for the QR image to that will be scanned.  Use a link to your web-based location (google docs are great).  Once you have a QR code, paste the image below each of your questions.  The QR code should link to a location.
  4. Have the students work in small groups (four worked best for me).  Each location has a specific QR code.  Have each group scan a code to know where to start.
  5. Once students complete their question, they scan the QR code for the next location/question.  If you are really enterprising, you can create multiple choice QR codes and have the wrong answers take students to the principals office.

My name is Scott. After 18.5 years as a high school math teacher in public education I have made the move to become a full time PhD student. I started using gamification and mastery learning. I changed my practice. I chose to go back to school to learn as much as I could. To bring that knowledge from academia and research to the teacher on the front line. I have had the opportunity to present at several conferences and share what I have learned with others. Its through these connections that we can be the best teachers we can for our students. They deserve it and we sell ourselves short when we don't give it. I love talking with teachers about change.
